What AI Changes About Developer Productivity
AI will not remove the need for engineering judgment. It may make judgment more important.
The practical opportunity is to reduce the time between question, context, experiment, and review. Developers do not only need code generation. They need better access to the reasoning, patterns, constraints, and history that surround the code.
From Tools to Systems
Section titled “From Tools to Systems”AI developer productivity should be evaluated as a system. Does it help engineers understand a codebase faster? Does it reduce repetitive work? Does it surface missing context? Does it improve review quality? Does it help new team members learn the organization?
The most valuable AI adoption will likely happen where teams already have strong engineering discipline. AI can amplify clarity, but it can also amplify confusion if the underlying systems are vague.
